Motorcycle Review: 2012 Honda Superbike CBR 1000 RR / 600 RR

The CBR 1000 RR celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012. During those 20 years, the bike transformed from the original CBR900RR, to the CBR929RR in 2000, the CBR954RR in 2003, and finally the CBR1000RR in 2004.

The CBR1000RR hasn't received many upgrades since becoming a 1000cc machine, but that all changed for the 2012 model; the most notable update to the 2012 CBR 1000 RR directly relates to better handling.

Honda says: "Changes to the CBR1000RR for 2012 focus on sharpening what is arguably the most critical component in a motorcycle designed for sporting use: chassis performance. Granted, big-time horsepower always holds its own attractions and the CBR1000RR pours out huge quantities of horsepower and torque right in the midrange."

They’re known as “sweet spot” motorcycles: streetbikes so balanced, user-friendly and all-around capable that they stand well above their two-wheeled counterparts, forging lasting reputations as exciting, practical and stylish machines.

The foundation of the motorcycle is an air-cooled Buell S3's 1200cc V-twin powerplant. Massow has designed a bunch of other concepts that take well-known logos and turns them into something resembling a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Review: 2012 Triumph Street Triple

When news of the 2011 Triumph Speed Triple hit the internet, with its spiffy new headlight and crazy-light aluminum frame, the clock immediately started ticking on when the 1050cc triple's little sibling, the 675cc Street Triple & Street Triple R would get the same treatment from Triumph.

Hopes for a 2011 update were seemingly dashed when the British company posted the current model Street Triple as its 2011 offering, but rumors persisted that we’d see an updated middleweight naked very soon.

Being released as an early 2012 model, our colleagues in France have seemingly gotten the first official photos of the 2012 Triumph Street Triple & 2012 Triumph Street Triple R, as the bikes were unveiled at a new store on the Avenue de la Grande Armée in Paris.

U.S. pricing and availability has not been announced, though in the U.K., the 2012 models keep the same prices as the 2011 models with the Triumph Street Triple costing 6,649 pounds (US$10,650) and the Street Triple R priced at 7,349 pounds(US$11,772).

EICMA Bike 2011: KTM Freeride-E Motorcycle Unveiled

Introduced at EICMA 2011, KTM has unveiled the Freeride-E. The small and nimble Freeride-E is meant to be an off-road vehicle with the capabilities to be ridden virtually anywhere.

Powered by a brushed DC motor from Agni capable of 2.1kWh, the little motor is rated to put out 10 horsepower, though KTM says it's good for up to 30 horses. Range varies on the Freeride-E, according to KTM, with a “professional” capable of draining the battery in 20 minutes, whereas an “amateur” could ride it up to 45 minutes.

KTM is being cautious in regards to the Freeride's planned production. Currently, only 100 will be sold in early 2012 while the company dips its toes in the electric bike market. Judging by the response it gets, KTM will then decide to increase production or shelve the project and go back to the drawing board. Pricing is yet to be determined on this small-scale machine, but expect it to be competitive with similar E-bikes on the market.

A feedback from one of the Masei Helmet customers

"I previously posted a negative comment regarding a transaction I had with this company. I want to go on record to say that although there was considerable delay in resolving the issue, Masei DID come through and correct their mistake to my satisfaction. I would now HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing from Masei Helmets!"

Affordable Super-Looking Motorcycle Car: KTM X-Bow roadster Only US$55,000

I saw this car once on the street in Hong Kong. The driver said he gets some troubles when it rains, because it has no top and windshield. A drive must need a helmet to drive this car! Just drive this car like a motorbike.

Anyway, KTM first revealed its new X-Bow roadster in 2007, but sales didn't begin until 2008. The 1500-pound car has a four-cylinder Audi engine offering 237 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 228 pound-feet of torque between 2200 and 4000 rpm. Audi reportedly considered selling a version of the X-Bow under its own brand, but later dropped the idea.

A choice of either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox is offered. KTM says the X-Bow will hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds. A top speed of 180 mph is said to be possible.

The X-Bow has no windshield, and instead will come with a helmets, intended to offer shelter from the elements rather than full crash protection.

KTM originally intended to build 500 X-Bows annually but has already received orders for over 1,000 examples. Pricing starts around US$55,000 in the United States.

Between the X-Bow and the Ariel Atom, it appears as though more companies are attempting to offer supercar performance at a more main-stream price. While the new entrants don't offer the luxury or prestige of more expensive sports car, they do rival their performance numbers.

Although it remains to be seen if the new breed of ultra-light and affordable sports cars can sustain their popularity, the news of KTM's expansion seems to be good news for the segment.

Motorcycle HD Review: 2012 Harley-Davidson Forty Eight

Powered by a 1,200cc v-twin, the 2012 Harley-Davidson Forty Eight is available in vivid black, big blue pearl, H-D orange and chrome yellow. It's priced at US$10,499.

The HD Forty-Eight™ is an urban brawler that drips attitude from every element; from the fat, balloon tires to the all-steel peanut tank to the solo seat. With fat front tire and steel peanut tank, this low-slung urban brawler is ready to rip through any scene.

Custom touches define this bulldog of a bike. A slammed speedometer, under bar mounted mirrors and 26-inch seat height offer a low profile, while the peanut tank and big 16-inch wheels combine for a menacing look that could only come from Harley-Davidson.
