Motocross Review: 2013 Suzuki RM-Z250

The 2013 Suzuki RM-Z250 features a redesigned chassis with new suspension, including the Showa Separate Function front Fork (SFF), which separates the spring and damping functions. The right leg holds the spring (with fully adjustable spring preload), while the left leg incorporates the cartridge assembly to manage damping.

The engine received a newly designed piston and piston pin, which was developed using Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. The new piston is 3% lighter without any compromise to strength and integrity.

The crankcase reed valve was revised for more efficient lubrication and the new oil strainer has a stronger magnet to capture contaminants from the engine oil. Together these changes contribute to better throttle response and smoother power delivery.

The RM-Z250 motor also received updated intake and exhaust cams. All the engine changes were aimed at improving mid-range torque and acceleration. The five speed transmission now has revised gears and shift cam for smooth and precise shifting. A revised clutch release cam shape improves clutch feel. The cooling efficiency was increased with redesigned radiator fins and revised water hose routing.

The RM-Z250 also features a new by-pass hose routing to simplify occasional radiator maintenance. Dunlop MX-51 tires complete the changes.
